This Week's Prompt -

Are there genres you read that you feel a little shy about?

My Answer

The genre I sometimes feel shy about reading is young adult (YA). Even though I am still technically close to the target age, I still sometimes feel hesitant admitting it. YA sometimes gets a reputation for being less serious or less literary. I want to be seen as well-read and literary, especially with the fact that I have taken many college-level English classes.

Some people automatically see adult books as more sophisticated. I believe that YA books can be fast-paced and emotionally engaging. They often explore themes that other books do as well, like identity, friendship, love, and growing up. Many YA books deal with serious themes like grief, identity, and mental health as well. Just because something is accessible doesn't mean it lacks depth. Sometimes I just want a fun story to read before I go to bed. Not every book has to be intellectually heavy.

I think that reading should contain a mix of genres. I personally will be reading a young adult book at the same time I'm reading a classic or a heavy book. It's all about the balance. It always reminds me that reading should still be enjoyable.

Reading doesn't have to impress anyone. Sometimes the best books are the ones that make you want to keep turning pages.
