July Zine Monthly: The Best Zines I Read in July

Introduction

I am excited to embark on a new series where, every month, I curate a collection of my top zines. In this article, I'll share my favorite zines, the stories they tell, and my personal rating for them. Read my article My Favorite Places to Find Zines if you want to know where to find zines.

It’s easier than you think, by Sophie Mautner

zine examples

This zine contains cutouts from a variety of sources, including sketchbooks, newspapers, fortune cookies, and receipts. By combining these cutouts with beautiful pictures, Sophie Mautner produced stunning results. This zine contains a variety of quotes, some of which are about love and others which are about escaping.

I was drawn to this zine because of its gorgeous cover. This particular zines has the best cover, in my opinion, out of all the ones I included in this article.

I adore how you do not know exactly what happened and are attempting to determine what the inspiration or reason behind writing this was. I was curious about Sophie Mautner's other incredible creations after reading this zine, but I could only find this one published publication.

Safe Places To Keep Your Heart by Aolani Tagle

zine examples

This zine features art, music, and poetry created by Aolani Tagle. It dives into what it means to be vulnerable, growth and love. The majority of the pages contain a QR code. Each directs you to a different song on SoundCloud.

Barnard Zine Library Newsletter (July 2023)

zine examples

My third favorite zine I read this month is part of a monthly zine publication called Barnard Zine Library. Each issue showcases a plethora of zine recommendations including one zine review. They release each zine at the beginning of each month.

My favorite thing about this zine was how, in their reviews, they don’t just share new zines, they also show older zines, that otherwise might of been forgotten.

Butler's Warning: Our Health in a Changing Climate by Alekhya Maram

zine examples

This zine is a research project exploring how climate change affects our health, specifically cell exposure to particulate matter. I loved learning about this subject. Maram stood out from other research projects for the fact that she presented hers in a zine.

HOLY! (September 2020) by Helvetica Blanc

zine examples

"Holy!" is a monthly zine that showcases Helvetica Blanc's artwork. I love Blanc’s art style and colors they use. Sadly, the September 2020 issue is the only free zine in this series, but there are a few other free zines by Helvetica Blanc.
